If you do not have a garage, the electrician can install the charger on the exterior wall of your house, or trench a line to a freestanding pedestal in your driveway.
Hardwiring is critical for outdoor installs. If you use a plug-in NEMA 14-50 receptacle outdoors, electrical code requires a bulky, weatherproof "in-use" bubble cover. Over time, water often finds its way into these covers, causing corrosion and ground faults. Hardwired units bypass the plug entirely, keeping the connections completely sealed inside the unit.
Trenching a line to a detached garage or a driveway pedestal is significantly more expensive than an attached-garage install, as it requires digging an 18-inch to 24-inch trench, laying PVC conduit, and backfilling.
