EV charging answer

How long does the actual installation take?

Short answer

A typical residential EV charger installation takes 2 to 4 hours. Trenching a line to a detached garage can take a full day or two. The total timeline from quote to completion is usually 1 to 2 weeks, largely depending on city permit wait times.

More detail

The physical installation of the charger and conduit is straightforward for an experienced electrician. They mount the charger, bend and run the conduit, pull the wire, install the breaker, and torque all connections to spec.

If a panel upgrade is required, the timeline extends. A panel heavy-up takes a full day and requires coordinating a power shutoff with your local utility company. This utility coordination can sometimes delay the project by several weeks.

The post-installation city inspection usually happens a few days after the work is completed. You can safely use your charger while waiting for the final inspection.
