EV charging answer

Can I get a tax credit for installing an EV charger?

Short answer

Yes, the Federal 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit covers 30% of the hardware and installation costs, up to $1,000. However, starting in 2023, the credit is restricted to homes located in eligible low-income or non-urban census tracts.

More detail

The 30C tax credit was extended through 2032 by the Inflation Reduction Act, but with a major geographic restriction. You must check your address on the Department of Energy's 30C Eligibility Locator map. If your census tract does not qualify, you cannot claim the credit.

If you do qualify, the credit covers both the charging station and the professional installation, including permit fees and any necessary wiring. Because it is a tax credit, you must have federal tax liability to benefit from it—it is non-refundable.

To claim it, save your itemized invoice from the electrician and your charger receipt, and file IRS Form 8911 with your tax return for the year the charger was installed.
